1. Re-cut the stems at a sharp angle with a knife or scissors before you put them in a vase to make sure their vascular cells are wide open to take up water.
2. Place the flowers immediately in clean water mixed with flower food. Make sure there are no leaves still below the water line as they will rot and release harmful bacteria which will kill the flowers.
3. Repeat this process every three to four days and remove any wilting flower heads, this ensures that the water supply is sent to the flowers still blooming or, in the case of multi-headed variets, still to open.
4. Flowers last longer in a cool environment so keep them away from open fires, radiators or any sources of direct heat.
